Award-winning juvenile fiction book provides “insider’s view” of racehorses’ peril-filled lives

“Only winning counts, every racehorse knows that.
But what happens when you don’t win?”
Written from the horse’s point of view and filled with authentic details, RAJA, Story of a Racehorse chronicles the life of a well-bred Thoroughbred racehorse destined for greatness. After a promising start on the path to the Triple Crown, a series of bad luck events ends Raja’s racing career. What happens next is the main focus of former amateur steeplechase jockey Anne Hambleton’s dizzying yet “could be true” tale of the odyssey of an “off-the-track-Thoroughbred.”
Raja’s journey takes him to the “A show” circuit, along the streets of New York City’s mounted police beat, to the horrors of the livestock auction, and finally to the stable of a retired champion steeplechase jockey where he finds a chance to realize his destiny.
Hambleton comments, “As a lifelong horsewoman, I am constantly surrounded by stories of ex-racehorses. Horses get passed around, life happens, and the unlucky ones end up at auctions where they risk being purchased by meat buyers. Unwanted racehorses and horse slaughter are very real and current issues. On the other hand, many ex-racehorses have excelled in sport careers.”
“An outstanding debut novel for young people.” – Kirkus Starred Review
RAJA, Story of a Racehorse was named to the Kirkus Reviews’ Best of 2012 Indie list and is the recipient of the Mom’s Choice Gold award, the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Silver Young Reader Fiction award, and the IPPY Bronze award for juvenile fiction. The book includes illustrations by award-winning equestrian artist Margaret Kauffman and a glossary of horse terms.
AUTHOR: Anne Hambleton is a lifelong horsewoman and former amateur steeplechase jockey. She lives in Vermont with her family and several ex-racehorses whom she actively trains and competes. Raja, Story of a Racehorse is her first novel.
