PLANET DOG BECOMES FOUNDING MEMBER OF PET INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITY COALITION

Westbrook, ME (March 28, 2013) – Planet Dog (http://www.planetdog.com) is excited to announce it has become a founding member of the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition (PISC).  The socially-responsible company has joined other pet industry leaders by donating $10,000 to the new non-profit to create a playground for manufacturers, distributors and retailers to collaboratively navigate a clear pathway toward improved environmental performance in the pet industry.

“We embrace the efforts of the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition to extend these values and commitment to the pet industry and we are excited to be a part of its founding,” says Stephanie Volo, Planet Dog’s Top Dog and Partner. “We look forward to a productive and successful collaboration with other industry leaders to put sustainability at the forefront.  It will strengthen the industry as a whole while protecting our most valuable resource, our planet,” adds Volo.

Because PISC is mission, not profit-driven, it celebrates an open membership model that encourages all companies, regardless of their size or financial investment to join.  The collaborative approach will transform the knowledge and resources available in the industry as a whole to provide tools and resources for companies to implement real change.

In addition to Planet Dog, other founding PISC Members include:  Cardinal Pet Care; Natural Capitalism; Only Natural Pet and “I and Love and You” and WestPaw Design.  Each company also donated $10,000 to join the team and get the ball rolling.

“The approach to the mission and vision of the new Coalition is threefold,” says Founder Chris Bentley.  “Directed by Harvard Sustainability and Environmental Management Graduate Caitlyn Bolton, the new non-profit will navigate the sustainability needs of businesses and serve as a playing field for bottom-up and top-down innovation and collaboration,” adds Bentley.

PISC will provide a web-based Toolkit that will serve as a roadmap to guide members toward greater sustainability achievements.  An Accreditation and Leadership Award component based on voluntary action toward implementation will create trust-worthy standards and a universal sustainability language for the industry as a whole.

“Planet Dog has been thinking globally and acting doggedly since 1997 and we are committed to the notion that our values bring us our value,” says Volo.  “We have consistently worked to provide the highest quality pet products made with a deep concern for the environment, and our customers have rewarded us with their loyalty because of it,” adds Volo.

Planet Dog’s products are socially responsible too.  The company donates 2% of every purchase to the Planet Dog Foundation (PDF), its non-profit grantmaking organization, to support canine service programs across the country.  So far, PDF has given away almost $900,000 in cash grants and in-kind product donations to help dogs help people in need! http://www.planetdog.foundation.org.
