Pet Food Recalled Due to Salmonella Scare
Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods issues alert for selected AvoDerm dog formulas.
After a recall by a major pet food manufacturer due to potential salmonella contamination, BluePearl Veterinary Partners is recommending that pet owners keep a close watch on their dogs.
According to the alert issued by Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods, packages of AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula with the “Best Before” dates of 28 Aug 2013, 29 Aug 2013, 30 Aug 2013 are being recalled.
Customers who find the potentially contaminated product on their shelves at home should discard it immediately — and stop handling it, since salmonella can pose a risk to humans and other animals as well as dogs.
In addition to direct transmission to dogs, salmonella is zoonotic disease, which means it can be passed from animals to humans. Common symptoms of salmonella in dogs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort.
“If your pet is experiencing vomiting, diarrhea or otherwise not acting right, contact your primary care veterinarian as soon as possible,” said Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners, a group of specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals. “If it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at one of our locations.”
The company had distributed the recalled product to retailers and distribution centers in California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Virginia and Washington.
